Shopping tip

Round each dimension up to the nearest standard box size when you buy boxes. If the DIM weight looks high, try less padding or a poly mailer for soft goods.

How it works

Picking a box looks trivial until dimensional weight pricing enters the picture. An oversized box does not just waste void fill, it inflates the dimensional weight the carrier bills you on. On the other hand, a box with no cushioning room arrives damaged and costs you a return plus a replacement. The right box is the smallest one that still protects the product.

Enter your product's length, width and height plus padding per side, one inch of cushioning is a safe default, and the calculator returns the recommended box dimensions. It also shows the dimensional weight of that box at the standard 139 divisor, so you can see the shipping cost implication of your packaging choice immediately.

When you buy boxes, round each dimension up to the nearest standard size; custom sizes cost more than the small amount of extra void fill. For soft goods like apparel, compare the box result against a poly mailer, which has effectively zero dimensional weight penalty and costs a fraction to ship. And if you ship the same product repeatedly, consider stocking that exact box size instead of trimming larger boxes each time.

Box strength matters too: single-wall corrugated is fine for light items, but double-wall is worth it for anything heavy or fragile going through parcel networks.

Frequently asked questions

How much padding should I leave in a shipping box?

About one inch of cushioning on each side is a safe default for most products. Fragile items may need two inches; soft goods in a snug box can get away with less.

Should I use a box or a poly mailer?

Boxes protect rigid and fragile items. Poly mailers are cheaper and dodge dimensional weight for soft goods like clothing. If it cannot break, mailer it.

What are standard box sizes?

Common stock sizes include 6x6x6, 8x8x8, 12x9x6 and 12x12x12 inches. Buying stock sizes is far cheaper than custom boxes, so round your calculated size up to the nearest one.

How does box size affect shipping cost?

Through dimensional weight: carriers bill the greater of actual and dimensional weight. A box a few inches too large can bill several pounds heavier than the product weighs.

Single-wall or double-wall boxes?

Single-wall is fine for light items under a few pounds. Double-wall corrugated is worth the extra cost for heavy or fragile products traveling through parcel networks.
