SKU tips

  • Keep SKUs under 20 characters and never reuse one for a different product.
  • Avoid confusing characters: 0 and O, 1 and I look alike on labels.
  • Use the same structure across your catalog so SKUs stay scannable.

How it works

A SKU, stock keeping unit, is the unique code you assign each product variant for inventory tracking. Good SKUs make picking, packing, restocking and multichannel selling dramatically easier; bad SKUs, random numbers or spreadsheet chaos, turn every warehouse task into a treasure hunt. If you sell the same product on Etsy, Amazon and your own site, one shared SKU keeps everything in sync.

A strong SKU is short, readable and structured: segments for brand, product and attributes joined by a consistent separator, ending in a number for variants. This generator builds them from your inputs, strips spaces and special characters automatically, and numbers a whole batch sequentially so you can SKU an entire product line in one pass.

Keep SKUs under about 20 characters so they fit on labels and pick lists. Avoid confusing character pairs like 0 and O or 1 and I, which get misread on printed labels. Never reuse a SKU for a different product, even after the original is discontinued: old codes live on in reports, returns and accounting.

Note that a SKU is your internal code, not a barcode. Marketplaces like Amazon may separately require a UPC, EAN or GTIN for brand registry and listings; the SKU is what you use to keep track of things on your side.

Frequently asked questions

What is a SKU?

A stock keeping unit: a unique code you assign to each product and variant to track inventory. It is your internal identifier for picking, packing, restocking and reporting.

How long should a SKU be?

Under about 20 characters. Long enough to be meaningful, short enough to fit on labels, pick lists and spreadsheet columns without wrapping.

Can two products share a SKU?

Never. Each product variant needs its own SKU. Reusing codes, even for discontinued items, corrupts inventory counts, reports and returns handling.

What is the difference between a SKU and a barcode?

A SKU is your internal tracking code. A barcode like a UPC or EAN is a standardized retail identifier, often required separately by marketplaces such as Amazon.

What characters should I avoid in SKUs?

Spaces, special characters and lookalike pairs like 0/O and 1/I. Stick to letters, numbers and one separator so SKUs survive labels, scanners and spreadsheets.
